The graph by the Bureau of Criminal Justice gives an overview of the murder rate compared  to executions in the U.S. from 1930 to the year 2000.

The death penalty fell into disuse in the 1960s. The Federal Government ordered a moratorium in 1972 and homicide rates rose sharply. The moratorium was ended in 1976 and homicides dropped dramatically.
